blue ocean necklace

Design Centre Enmore graduate Ok J Jang continued with her winning ways receiving the Fantasy Award in the International Opal Jewellery Design Awards (IOJDA) 2013.

It is one of the most prestigious opal jewellery design awards in the world, held every two years in Lightning Ridge, New South Wales.

Ok who graduated from Design Centre Enmore with a Certificate III in Jewellery Manufacture in 2007 still keeps in contact with her teacher Catherine Harrington.

“Her winning design Blue Ocean was based on the colours she associates with the ocean,” Catherine said.

“They are directly reflected in the 123.5 carat boulder opal she chose for her necklace.

“The necklace also incorporates a black pearl, coral, rubies and sapphires, with gold and titanium creating the overall structure.

“Ok says she is very proud of Design Centre Enmore and we are very proud of her,” Ms Harrington said.

OK is no stranger when it comes to winning awards.

In 2007 she was the winner of the IOJDAA Apprentice of the Year, with her work Sunset at Ayers Rock.

In 2011 she received two highly commended awards in the Fantasy and Haute Joaillerie sections.

Sydney TAFE has a new look

the new Sydney TAFE logo

According to our customers, Sydney TAFE needed a new brand.

“They told us our old brand was outdated and it wasn’t going to take us into a new competitive and commercial environment,” Sydney TAFE Director David Riordan said.

Earlier this year a competition was held to find a refreshed brand to take us into the future.

Winning designer

Owen Cutbush said, “I’m so proud and honoured that Sydney TAFE picked my design. It means so much to me”.

Owen, who was a mechanic before he studied an Advanced Diploma of Graphic Design at Sydney TAFE said TAFE had literally changed the direction of his life.

“The skills I gained at Sydney TAFE have enabled me to jump right into the job I have now, which is working at Network Ten as a lead designer.”

Owen explained how he came up with the design.

“The idea came to me from looking at the old logo,” he said.

“A rebrand is to refresh the old brand. I used the angle of the A from TAFE to make a star.

“A star is such a positive icon and symbol.”

The points of the star represent the seven colleges and faculties.

Owen said after trying several different designs he eventually had “a Eureka moment” which was a wonderful feeling.

Sydney TAFE’s future

Sydney TAFE Director David Riordan said the rebrand support the goals of the strategic plan.

“Sydney TAFE’s vision is to provide our customers with the best training and skills development to be able to shore up their future and change their lives.

“Our future is about our customers.

“We need to be more competitive and more customer focussed.

“The goal for the future is to be the premier provider of vocational education and training in NSW and ensure every one of our customers who engage with us has a first class learning experience.”

Find out more about the Sydney TAFE brand by going to the Director’s message page and watching a video of Owen and David.

Zachary Trindall with Deputy Directo General, Schools, Greg Prior

A Sydney TAFE staff member and Sydney TAFE TVET student are among the winners of the Gili Awards.

The TAFE NSW Gili Awards celebrate and recognise the achievements of Aboriginal TAFE NSW students, staff and programs that have contributed to Aboriginal communities through training and education.

Zachary Trindall

One young man with a bright future is Zachary Trindall.

Zachary won the TAFE delivered Vocational Education and Training (TVET) Gili Award.

Currently a student at Tempe High School, Zachary is doing a TVET construction course.

So what makes Zachary stand out above the rest?

According to Rosemary Ayoub, TVET Coordinator at Randwick TAFE and his teachers Steve Edgecumbe, Nic Preston and Mark Hawkins, Zachary is hungry for knowledge and a delight to teach.

He has been attending TAFE for two years and his effort and commitment have never wavered.

“He is continually demonstrating that he is thinking and problem solving by regularly asking relevant questions that relate to his experience, understanding and future aspirations,” Rosemary said.

“Randwick TAFE construction teachers say Zachary is by far the best TVET student they have seen. His host for work experience in Year II spoke highly of him and made a point of calling TAFE to speak of Zachary’s professionalism, dedication, talent and amazing work ethic.

“He has encouraged Zachary to seek an apprenticeship with him when he finishes school,” Rosemary said.

Karin Ossedryer

Karin Ossedryer has been a dedicated teacher at Eora College for 10 years. She received the Non-Aboriginal Staff Award.

Karin has worked across Aboriginal communities in Redfern, Waterloo, La Perouse and the Sutherland Shire.

Sydney TAFE Aboriginal Co-ordinator, Danny Allende said Karin had increased educational outcomes for Aboriginal students.

“The direction of her educational practice is learner driven and experientially based, which focuses on Aboriginal cultural philosophies,” Danny said.

“Her classes have had a high student participation and completion rate at a high standard. She is extremely thorough in her application to her work ethics. Karin’s generosity with her time has supported staff, students and community people to complete their academic requirements which has led to positive outcomes,” Danny said.

Empty Bowls project

empty bowl project

Sydney TAFE’s Ceramic Design Studio joined forces with the Port Hacking Potters and Hazelhurst Arts Centre pottery students to create 400 hand-made, professional-standard ceramic bowls.

The Empty Bowls project aims to fight hunger, one bowl at a time.

The ceramicists, volunteers and the Sutherland Shire Lioness Club fulfilled this aim by providing bowls, filled with soup, donned with a bread roll and delivered with fun and generosity.

The project, first established in the USA, strives to create positive and lasting social change through the arts, education and projects that help to build a community.

The bowls were sold through a silent auction, and the event raised almost $8,000 for a local charity that provides meals for the disadvantaged.

Sydney TAFE students blitz awards night

Cassilda Parkinson won a gold medal.

Fashion technology and costume students successfully cleaned up the student categories of the Screen Printing and Graphic Imaging Association of Australia’s (SGIAA) Digital and Screen Print Awards held in October in Sydney.

Sydney TAFE has been entering the biennial event since 1999, but this is the first time we’ve won every student award.

The students study screen printing at Sydney TAFE as an enrichment to their mainstream studies.

Silver medal winner Brianna Bondaruk-Jachin said studying screen printing was “really beneficial”.

“It’s really hands on and the teachers are fantastic,” Brianna said.

She described the teachers as “hugely encouraging”.

Her task in her fashion technology diploma was to create a crinoline dress in gelato colours – which she took literally, designing what she calls her ice cream dress.

She took pictures of ice cream cones which she edited and then had digitally printed onto material.

Cassilda Parkinson who won a gold medal was inspired by nature and the story of The Secret Garden.

Head Teacher, Screen, Digital Printing and Print Finishing, Stephen Anderson said the students had to learn how to be professional in what they did.

By studying digital and screen printing they were given tools so they don’t have to outsource. Most importantly they can talk printing terminology.

Stephen said Sydney TAFE was supported by industry and had “unique and probably the best equipment” of any training institution in Australia.

Students had the capacity to “print on anything”.

Head Teacher, Fashion Technology, Tracey Malvern thanked Stephen and his team for their dedicated approach and for giving her students “the knowledge and skills to add to their competencies”.

“These hands-on skills and experiences will make them very attractive to the industry at the completion of their studies.”

Winners

Digital print, Gold Medal, Cassilda Parkinson

Digital print, Silver Medal, Briana Bondaruk-Jachin

Digital print, Bronze Medal, Elizabeth Maratheftis

Screen print, Gold Medal, third year apprentices

Screen print, Silver Medal, Ellen Figgis and printed by stage 2 apprentices

Baker's Delight Training Centre teaches all the fundamentals.

Did you know Sydney TAFE has a specially designed classroom for Baker’s Delight apprentices?

Sydney TAFE runs a specially built classroom for Baker’s Delight apprentices at Ultimo College. The centre was established in partnership with the company to provide high quality training for Baker’s Delight franchisees.

The apprentices learn in a classroom which is built to look like a Baker’s Delight shop so that students can get a better understanding of the company. Baker’s Delight is working in partnership with Sydney TAFE to help boost the productivity and training for their staff and franchisees. The centre itself cost more than $600,000 and is a great asset that franchisees can access exclusively to get training for their employees.

Apprentices are taught Baker’s Delight recipes, techniques and operations which makes it much easier when they are working in their shop. For franchisees this is a huge boost to productivity as apprentices can practise skills uninterrupted while away from the workplace.

Information about the actual course can be found here.

Dragica Sinikoski is used to going that one step further for her students.

Dragica, the Outreach Coordinator at St George College, was presented with an EDNA Award for her special contribution to the education of women and girls.

African dreaming hat

Race day fashion is on display at Sydney TAFE’s Limelight Gallery.

Sydney TAFE millinery graduates reveal their artistry and technical skills having created some amazing hats.

Using fabrics such as Crin – a fabric literally made from horsehair – the designs are both simple and elaborate.

Margot Smithyman uses many materials she has sourced overseas. Her African Dreaming hat features porcupine quills from Malawi.

Graduate Lindsay Clare Pringle’s philosophy about millinery is based on the incredible amount of freedom a milliner has with creating anything so long as it can be worn on the head. Lindsay’s sculptural hats are made for horse racing carnivals, weddings, special events and photo shoots.

Carole Maher changed her career focus from advertising to millinery. After studying at the Royal London College of Fashion she returned to Australia and completed a millinery course at Sydney TAFE. As well as teaching others, Carole continues to do masterclasses with milliners worldwide.

Limelight Gallery’s exhibition is on display till Saturday, 9 November.

The Gallery is located in a busy thoroughfare (underneath Sydney TAFE Building W) which connects Central Station, UTS, the ABC and Ultimo TAFE.

Opening hours

Monday to Friday 10.30am – 6pm

Saturday 11am – 3pm
